Why is Haiti so poor, while there is much better living on the Dominican side of the island? One would think an island with two countries would have relatively similar economies. See St. Maarten.

I'd be curious to see an comparison of both countries economic policies. Many poor countries are poor because of their government's economic policies. This is where I'd start to look for an explanation of Haiti's poverty.

DR isn't exactly a prosperous land of milk and honey.

This may explain somethings.

Quote:
Haiti scores below the world average in business freedom, investment freedom, financial freedom, property rights, and freedom from corruption. Starting a business takes four times longer than the world average, and commercial laws are applied inconsistently and non-transparently. Restrictions on foreign capital are significant, and investment is subject to an arbitrary bureaucracy. Prolonged instability has weakened the rule of law.

I think the lack of political stability is the main reason. Haiti has been subjected to numerous governmental coups. When you have violent and unpredictable government transitions, investors are reluctant to invest in a country. When you don't have capital, your economy simply cannot thrive.

Yeah, Mexico and the US have the exact same standard of living as one can easily see.

And the reason for the difference is, as always, corrupt government.

But we're catching up to Mexico in levels of corruption. It's part of that "Hope and Change" we were promised.

Too funny for words. But I disagree.
Its due to party hardliners who refuse to hold their own party accountable for the same misdeeds that drive them crazy about the other.
