Please note that they have 12million people living on a island a little bit larger than Vermont....which has about 700,000 inhabitants.

Back in 1970 they had about 4.5 million people.

While there is room to blame the US for some of Haiti's troubles....we didn't cause the earthquake and we sure didn't cause them to VASTLY OVERPOPULATE THE ISLANDS RESOURCES.

P.S. It's our fault that Haiti can't compete with say Iowa in terms of growing crops? What happened to free trade? They have wonderful beaches and a temperate climate, potential for tourism that other places don't have.

Yes, we have provided some aid. Today I want to know that the aid we're providing is serving that purpose, and not exacerbating problems. Another thread by LauraC wants to know how we can thoughtfully help them. That's what I'm aiming at- we need to grow up, learn from mistakes, do better next time.

Maybe this injection of money will let them actually build an economy much like South Florida did after the devastation of hurricane Andrew.

This spoiled rich kid knocked off the Kaiser, Hitler and Japan. And rebuilt Europe and recreated a pacificistic Japan. And is leading the humanitarian effort in Haiti.

And you want to know if we're helping? Do yourself a favor. Avoid Mother Jones, Kos, and Olbermann. All they know is Bush, Bush, Bush. Palin, Palin, Palin. Ugh ugh ugh. Us Hate America.

Well, the rest of us know better, and want to move on.

Hey, there's a novel idea. Move On. Maybe we ought to start a new political action group.

We could call it "MoveOn.org", and aim it at the embittered "progrssives" who live in the past and love to hate....

So Haiti's inability to correctly allocate donated money is our fault?

If you read the article you might be able to ask an intelligent question:

'Under U.S. influence, Baby Doc virtually eliminated import tariffs for U.S. goods. Soon Haiti was awash predatory agricultural imports dumped by American firms. Domestic rice farmers went bankrupt. A nation that had been agriculturally self-sustaining collapsed. Farms were abandoned. Hundreds of thousands of farmers migrated to the teeming slums of Port-au-Prince.'

The U.S. kept control of Haiti's finances from 1910 until 1947.

As colonizers we are certainly not on a par with England or France, but we certainly have outpaced Canada. France was the original colonizer of Haiti, but the US has been in control for most of the 20th century. The CIA always seems to have it's say in these former colonies. There is a similarity to Iran, where England bled it dry of oil resources for 60 years, then the CIA disposed of the popular and democratically elected Mossadegh, because he refused to be a puppet Similarly the CIA engineered a coup to get rid of the democratically elected Aristad, because he would not kow-tow to US demands.
