I keep hearing how this economy is still in the tank, but our family seems to be doing well. We purchased a home on 6 acres, I have started contributing more to my retirement fund, have purchased two cars and going on our first family vacation, because now we can afford it. How did we do this? Well, first off we purchased a home we could AFFORD. We don't have six credit cards and we live on something called a budget. We are just a middle-class family that hasn't seen this so-called economic collapse. Anyone else doing well?
(And yes, I am thankful) It's called living within your means.

I have a feeling that those of us who are still fully employed, and by that I mean those who have continued to earn the full wages we have always earned, are doing ok. I personally am doing well but I consider myself to be very lucky in that I've had a job with the same company for over 30 years.
Well, you certainly accomplished a milestone. I would like to congratulate you. I've got my doubts that the present administration's policies helped in the least, though.

It's also called luck. Luck that you are not part of the group that call themselves unemployeed who cannot find work or work at their old salary levels.

Gloating about your current position is trollish.
I agree. How some people can be so myopic is beyond comprehension. Glad he and his family are doing so well. They should feel FORTUNATE that no one in the family has lost their job this year or come down with a debilitating, expensive illness. Hope their luck holds out next year as well.

As found elsewhere on CD: "Luck is word losers use to describe why winners win. It sort of saves them from looking in the mirror and seeing the real reason that they didn't achieve what they set out to do."
OK, that being said...
We bought a new car last weekend. A Lexus. I went to the dealer on Saturday and saw a huge inventory of cars and the place was packed with prospective buyers. I had to return the following day and was surprised to see how many were gone. The sales agent told me that they sold 34 cars on Saturday. If the average price was around $50K, that means they sold $1.7M (with an "M") in one day! I was shocked! I knew the greater DC area was fairly well-insulated from the economic malaise which has struck most places, but was surprised that even here people are spending so freely.
I wouldn't call the OP's comments trollish, but maybe everyone's not in such an advantageous position. Some areas have been hit much harder than others. If you haven't been hit, you're either "lucky" (if you're the superstitious type) or have prepared well for success in life. May we all be so fortunate to succeed in spite of the current administration's strident efforts to make sure we fail.

OP, congratulations in either case.
I did a poor job of pointing out that some of the effects of the economy are people living beyond their means. It's not luck on my part, but mostly common sense.
I'm doing fine, the town I live in has the lowest unemployment in the state, the county has the lowest unemployment in the state. Sure some businesses have had to adapt to the slump in the economy but that is mostly caused by events outside our area.
Calling the OPs comments trollish appears tpo be an attempt to censor any opinion that does not match yours.
