You didn't know that there was no law compelling all Americans to apply for an account and number?
That's odd.
Didn't you learn in your American history class that governments are instituted among men to (a) secure rights, and (b) govern those who CONSENT?
Social Security is 100% voluntary - for if it was mandatory - it would be involuntary servitude and unconstitutional.
Don't believe me - write a polite letter to your Senators and Congressman, and ask for a copy of the law that obligates ALL AMERICANS to participate before they can work in their own country.
When they can't produce the law, ask them for the official procedure for volunteering OUT.

Yes, SS does not force participation. However SS is mandatory b/c all dollars earned are subject to FICA. That tax is mandatory. That's the law that obligates participation in SS. True enough, a beneficiary can send back his benefits to the government but he still must kick in his FICA tax.
The claim that “[m]andatory or compelled compliance with the internal revenue laws is a form of involuntary servitude prohibited by the Thirteenth Amendment” has been identified by the IRS as a “frivolous position” that can result in a penalty of $5,000 when asserted in a tax return or included in certain collection-related submissions.
