Sen. Sanders (I-VT): "Let me begin by saying something to my friend Senator Gregg, through the chairman, through the chairman. I really don't like being lectured on deficits when you (Sen. Gregg) and many members of your party (Republicans) helped cause the situation we are in right now. "
"People voted, Senator Gregg, I believe you are one of them, for a war in Iraq, which some people will think will cost two or three trillion dollars, but you forgot to pay for that war. You and other people voted for tax breaks for the wealthiest 1%, costs $600 billion dollars, forgot to pay for that. You voted for a prescription drug medicare bill which will cost $400 billion dollars but doesn't negotiate prices with the pharmaceutical industry, forgot to ask how that was going to be paid for, you voted for the bailout and I believe you want to repeal the inheritance tax, which will cost a trillion dollars over a ten year period, benefiting the top 3/10ths of 1%. I voted against all of those things, so please, please, spare the lectures on deficit reduction."
I lean right, and he has a very valid point. These actions by the R's are the reason they are now the minority party in Washington. I am against any inheritance tax though. Passing on your assets to your family, no matter how much you may have, is no reason for the .gov to confiscate another large chunk of it. I know this tax is not an issue for your average citizen with the thresholds in place, but it is a matter of principal. Once the .gov has taxed your money in every way they possibly can, the amount you have left over should be yours forever to do or give how you wish, including what you make on investing it. If they want to mitigate investment loss, maybe there would be an argument.
I also think many more would have favorable opinions of the war if we did not nation build after we destroyed the place. We would of been out in a year at a far less substantial price tag.
a war tax will cause GOP to do a 180 so fast. raising your hand or signing something is so much easier than pulling out your wallet. americans love to spend but hate to pay.
The problem, and both sides do it, is that this is an example of one party excusing their own irresponsibility by pointing out that the other side is irresponsible. People of each party cheer the tactic and the irresponsibilty remains.
1: I ran up deficits but you're running up bad deficits. (Voters Cheer)
2: Leave my deficits alone because you were irresponsible and created deficits too. (Voters Cheer)
Deficits Climb.
Oooh lookie.. another dailykos story which ignores that Democrats have been in charge of spending for three years.. I guess when one ignores reality this story might make some valid points..
But Democrats, lets stand around and high 5 one another and pretend Congressman Sanders has valid points when he doesnt, because he managed to pass the buck and try to pull an Obama with his "blame Republicans"...
I'm not sure which is sadder.. the fact that we have Congressmen who try to lie about reality, or the fact that democrats are so gullible they believe this bs..

The point is, progessives like Sanders are correct.
