I know one sure reaction would be: "You see! He's a socialist!"

The metric system is not illegal in the U.S.

People can and do use it anytime they want.

Isn't choice great?

I was talking to my adult children about the metric system last week. They both agreed that it is silly that we don't use it routinely in this country. I told them there was a push to do this back when I was a kid and it was supposed to be a gradual change. Apparently somewhere along the lines someone thought we were all too stupid to be able to learn something different. Still, we got liters of soda out of it.

Seriously, we should switch. It's not a matter of choice, it's a matter of clinging to something for no good reason when the world is much smaller than it used to be. Every other country, and the scientific community, use the metric system. Conversion is lame and pointless and wasteful. It should have been done when I was a kid, like it was planned.

The majority of Americans back in the '70s did not want the metric system back then, and it's likely that most don't want it now.

Why are you so obsessed with President Obama?
This is not healthy.

I know I sure don't and neither does anyone I know.

By the way, for those of you who think it's a good idea, are you willing to pay to have every engineering drawing and architectural plan re-drawn? It would have to be done, especially for public property such as highways, dams and bridges. The cost would run into the billions.

We would have great fun if the speed limit signs were changed to metric even if we were warned.

One time while I was driving in Canada with car using a Miles per hour speedometer and I went into an interstate off ramp at 10 over the speed sign that said 45. I soon realized I was actually going near 90 Kilometers per hour. Lots of tire squealing ensued.

We already use the metric system routinely. Is just that we also use the other system routinely too. Much of industry use metric measurements in manufacturing products and this is especially true of anything manufactured for export as only three countries in the world do not use metric. And look at the nutrition info on the back of a food product, it is mainly in metric too.

The question is not whether we wish to use metric or not, but whether we wish to use one system exclusively.
