I consider myself fairly middle ground when it comes to politics, leaning left in some cases and right in others. However, after reading many posts here, it seems that I might as well be a die hard liberal since I don't agree with the entire conservative platform. What say you conservatives? How do you really feel about those of us in the middle? You know, the type who could care less about religion and "family values" in politics but believe in much more responsible government fiscal policy?

All it means is that you are inconsistent in your Conservatism as it applies to socio-political issues. As such, you probably fit in with the majority of people who lean neither to the extreme left nor to the extreme right ends of the political spectrum.

Perhaps you measure your political orientation too much by each "issue" and not enough on where your beliefs stand in relation to our Constitution? The Constutution is our nation's foundation of liberty. I suggest you start there in your research as you form your own opinion of whether you are or are not a "Conservative".

People referred to as social conservatives are anything but conservatives. They are authoritarians who have hijacked the word.

Congratulations, you can't be pigeon holed into a predefined mold meant to divide and conquer. Only the most dimwitted people fall into the category of conservative or liberal, so be happy that you have a brain. However you will get disenfranchised rather quickly with politics in America.

Libertarian, maybe?

Though I too am slightly sick of the way even that word now has been hijacked by the right-wing reactionary Glenn Beck so I call myself an "independent" now. I have some left-wing views (clear seperation of church & state, pro gay rights, universal healthcare as an eventual goal) and some right-wing ones (more focus on jobs rather than welfare, less taxation, pro- gun rights).

The bad thing? Republicans are totally stark-raving nuts. They argue against just about everything, come up with insane conspiracy theories, and engage in cultlike behavior. Heck, I can almost guarantee one will get on me for saying this and the post will read something like "SORRY i know the TRUTH about the commie Muslim socialist nazi athiest in the Whitehouse! Constitution founding fathers True Americans(TM)!"

Democrats are bankrupting our country, and plus they are huge sisses that are incapable of governing a bake sale. However, I would rather hang out with a Democrat in today's political environment, to be honest. They're kind of like that friend who means well, but you wouldn't let him anywhere near your car because he's a clutz and will break it for sure.

So, yup, if you're an Independent then congrats! You've realized that there's no single Right or Left way for everything and have risen above silly labels. Imagine, for a second, if everyone in Congress were an Independent, with no party affilliation. And, if we did include more than one party, we made sure that each had at least some representation in Congress like they do for all of the British parties in Parliament.

I doubt moderate people care. Partisan nuts like Limbaugh and Beck though would say yes...given that you aren't screaming at liberals in the streets, manning massive rallies, frothing at the mouth...and all that fun stuff. The problem is that the nuts have gotten to the helm and PR, so if you're moderate it's best to just watch the fray (I am).

As long as hypocritical nuts run the show, lies said by the "party" are more important then truth, anger rules over reason, any dissent is evil incarnate, and violence/slander are argumentative tools....I have no place near it.

Funny thing that...a man named George Washington suggested just such an idea.
