Utah gov. OKs eminent domain use on federal land (http://www.seattlepi.com/national/1110ap_us_utah_federal_land.html - broken link)

SALT LAKE CITY -- Fed up with federal ownership of more than half the land in Utah, Republican Gov. Gary Herbert on Saturday authorized the use of eminent domain to take some of the U.S. government's most valuable parcels.

Herbert signed a pair of bills into law that supporters hope will trigger a flood of similar legislation throughout the West, where lawmakers contend that federal ownership restricts economic development in an energy-rich part of the country.

States seem to be fighting back against the feds on NUMEROUS angles..

The goal is to incite a court battle that they believe they can win at the Supreme Court giving Utah the right to develop the disputed land and generate some $50 billion for the state's public schools.

btw, 60% of Utah is owned by the federal government..

Looks like a state is going to do what I've been wanting one to do for years. Withdraw consent to the feds owning real estate.

I guess Utah forgot that it's not a sovereign entity, but a state within a larger federal nation.
I think the Republicans should remind themselves of our federal system.

Wouldn't Utah have to pay the feds for the land? Do they have that kind of money these days?

The feds never paid Utah for the land to begin with, according to the state..

Virginia and Maryland need to take back their land and make DC disappear.

No, it's the federal government that needs to be reminded of it's place. There's a problem when the feds OWN 60% of state. The state is saying that federal ownership impedes commerce in the state leading to a reduction of needed funds....how are they being justly compensated for the loss?

It's ridiculous that anyone could defend the feds owning 60% of Utah or ANY state.

That's a rather specious argument. Utah was a US territory before it was a state. All the land was held by the feds.
