Thats what Republicans need to learn, and they have fooled the middle class, small business owner into thinking that they represent their best interest. Thats just not been true lately. I really hope a middle class centeric Republican party emerges, we need one. Democrats have at least helped, some, but not nearly enough. Taxes aren't going up for small business, regardless of what they've been told. Hell, my dads business taxes will be cut for supplying healthcare to his workers. More money for him, thats a good thing.
Reagan was all about wealth redistribution. From the middle class to the rich. The Republicans have sold out to the wealthy few.

But once THEY realize that there is $1 trillion to be had with that tax they will surely try very hard to pass it. Of course, this will happen after this fall's election. Remember Obama was only going to raise the taxes of those who made over $250k depending on when he talked. I say that because he brought that one down to $200 later on.

THEY don't care who has to pay that tax as long as they can keep from going too far down the tubes with their deficits.

One very simple question.

If a poor man and a rich man are taxed the same percentage, would you consider that "selling out the poor for the rich"?

Oldtimer, have you heard that SEIU and AFL-CIO are trying very hard to kick Glenn Beck off tv by getting their people to mail letters to Congress persons and his sponsors? Naw, that is not true since unions wouldn't act like that. Tee hee.

The top 20% make over 50% of the money.

The bottom 20% make 4% of the money.
That top 20% pays almost all the income taxes, too. Just think how the bottom group would not be able to collect what they never paid in income tax if that top 20% didn't pay all they pay.

Thats part of what has happened in the US. All of the money has pooled at the top, and isn't "trickling down" so to speak.

Well said. In fact, it was the focus on the middle class and small business that put America in front around 1940 and for about four decades. Early in the 70s though, the focus began to shift to the top, and accelerated in the 1980s, the policies we still follow today.

It is the stronger middle class and small business that is letting countries like India and China charge ahead.

It is not something Adam Smith professed as he realized the issue of burden. I don't see how regressive policies can help sustain a capitalistic society either. All it would do is create plutonomy, and ultimately spell disaster.

And we're not talking about its impact on nation and its economic/financial health yet.

From that sad day on 1/20/2009, this has been the M.O. for this administration:

Actually, no. Unless you don't count payroll taxes. As of 2005 (Tax Policy Center), households making less than $40K still paid about 14% in taxes, while those making into millions paid about 22%. So, the poor are also paying taxes. They just don't make enough, compared to the rich, to be noticed on the radar.

Thank you for posting that. I read this story and it infuriated me because it left out this crucial piece of information. If you want biased reporting, this is obviously it.

While everybody is fixated on income taxes as if those are the only burden anybody carries (and imposed by a government), this website provides a pretty good idea of taxes and contribution, by state, we don't talk about (all a burden on people, poor or rich).
