The majority of these imports are not skilled but cheap labor for foreign owned companies.
I think you confuse Green Card with H1B visa. But even then you are wrong, because the H1B workers get paid the same as a citizen.

In many cases much longer. The US gov't is now processing family-based applications for Mexicans and Philippinos who applied in the mid-1990's. (see chart)

No confusion at all and the HB1 visa workers do not get paid the same. Many come in to replace American workers at lower wages. Believe me I have looked into this, having some friends that used to be in the tech field

Employers must get a Foreign Labor Certification from the gov't and pay the prevailing wage for that occupation - this is part of the certification.

One thing that seems to be obscured in this debate--that the vast majority of green cards are issued to foreign-born spouses and children of US citizens. I went through that process myself when I married a british man in 1986 and we moved home to the US in 1990.

Do you suggest that Obama should not allow married couples to live together in the US if one is a citizen of another country? Or that individuals should avoid falling in love and marrying someone who is not a US citizen? Where are the family values, eh?

You are no longer permitted to worry about Americans. We must save everyone else first. Some lady was going from office to office collecting money for Haiti. I kicked her out of my office. She then said I am wrong for not wanting to help them. Told her to go back home then.

Exactly!

I am actually on an H1B visa and I am not paid less than a US worker by any means.

In addition H1B visas aren't that easy to get and neither is a green card especially if you are trying to get a green card in the employment based category. To get an employment based green card, your employer has to advertise the job that you will be working in and prove to the Department of Labor that you aren't taking a job from an American.

People who know nothing about the immigration process are always the ones speaking the loudest.

Interesting thread. The opening post starts with a question, with no effort to find the answer, and the rest of the right wing jumps in with their own little supply of misinformation.

A few answers:

1. A green card has nothing to do with getting into the country. What gets you into the country is a visa. A green card (no longer green) is a card evidencing your status as a permanently admitted resident alien. You're already here when you get a green card.

2. There are legal standards for qualifying for and receiving a green card. You can find out what they are if you are interested.

3. 2009 was not an aberration. The other top years, all over 1,000,000, were 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008.

4. Who was President in 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008?

If the original poster and the other people who piled on to blame Obama were honest, they would admit that they were wrong.

I'm not holding my breath.
