That’s the portion of American households that owe no income tax for 2009. The number is up from 38 percent in 2007, and it has become a popular talking point on cable television and talk radio. With Tax Day coming on Thursday, 47 percent has become shorthand for the notion that the wealthy face a much higher tax burden than they once did while growing numbers of Americans are effectively on the dole.
I make just under 60k, and pay ZERO federal INCOME tax...in fact they pay me
and FACTS are still FACTS....approximately 47% of WORKING americans pay little to NO federal INCOME tax

the point (not by the gop, btw) has always been that a percentage (currently about 47%) pay ZERO in federal INCOME tax, and many get back MORE than they originally put in (example...taxes out of my checks was around 3k.....but I got back 6k)

It is a correct assumption.
You are referring to payroll tax and not income tax. Everyone (even children with summer jobs) pay payroll taxes.
Now try paying REAL income tax- it hurts. I pay about $500,000 per year in income taxes. If I only had to pay payroll taxes like half of the population, I would be on easy street.

The GOP makes no distincton. It's an incorrect assmption that 47% of America is on the dole.
They can't explain away the simple fact 47% pay no federal income taxes. It's a fact. No ifs ands or butts about it.

Last I saw, all people pay into medicare, social security and support the military. In fact, the "rich" pay more into medicare than the regular joes because that tax is not income restricted. And with the healthcare reform bill that just passed, the "rich" will be paying even more into the medicare system with taxes over 200K/250K.
Sure there's a stop point with Social Security taxes. But that's only because the payout is limited to retirees when they start collecting. I'm sure they don't mind paying more into social security if they know they will get it all back.
Please NY Times (and I do read the NY times from time to time), please get better editors. This article is simple a joke.
I'd love to be an attorney and ask that NY times reporter about that 47% who pay no federal income tax.
My simple question is, "sir, is it true, that 47% of Americans pay zero federal income tax" "Just answer the answer" "Yes or No"
Than the NY times reporter would try to say, "but, but" The attorney would than stop the reporter, and direct the judge to have the reporter answer, "yes or no". The NY Times writer would have to say, "yes, 47% of Americans pay zero federal income taxes".
Well, I just wrote 3 different tax checks and I am far from wealthy.
Yeah..I got killed this year..owed Feds and State..and not anywhere near being rich..in fact way way under the Obama threshold..so I don't believe their b.s....paying for slackers who never applied themselves and had no ambition..probably too busy protesting something to actually get a paying job....and want to live off of my back...can't wait for November...
