For those who think the 'lower' incomes don't pay taxes, I was unemployed for 11 of 12 months, made much less than $50k and still paid $5,070 in taxes for 2009.

I've been there. I was unemployed and still had to claim it as income.

Wow...that's pretty rough. Any special circumstances that made that happen?

I paid zero in federal Income tax....

most people earning under 60k pay pay nearly nothing, and many get back more than they paid

UI is taxable income. Welfare is not. I did things the 'respectible' way. I'd be better off if I had pumped out a kid or two and gone on the dole.

What were your deductions?

Kids? Mortgage? School?

I have none of these. Many others do not either.

yes Unemployment Insurance is taxable...you probably got killed by NYC and NYS tax even more

but on the federal side:

if you figure $400 a week...at 52 weeks is less than 21,000....((((((((..The current maximum weekly benefit rate is $405.New York State Department of Labor - Before You Apply For Unemployment ))))))))))

according to the tax table PG 79 of the 1040 book...the tax on 21k is only 2500.........and if you EARNED 21k...that's not you TAXABLE income..which would be much less, give the deductions, and the standard deduction

not to mention that everytime you go out LOOKING for a job, you can deduct the COST

to say you were unemployeed for 11 months (max unemployement is 405/week) and say you got hit with 5k in taxes....is dishonest, to say the least,,,, unless you are talking ALL taxes....federal, state, NYC, town, etc

Yes, it was all taxes. $2,991 Fed (got a severance), $2,079 State and City. Ugh!

You worked one month and make 50k? Is your old position still open and, if so, please pm me the position details and where to apply.

I was thinking the same thing. I don't make 50K a month, and I work in a war zone. Then again, they did say "much less." Maybe they made $5070. And were taxed at 100 percent. I could see a lot of anger over something like that.
