Do people not read the articles? This is NOT a human/cow hybrid. It is a cloned human embryo (cloned in hopes of collection embryonic stem cells). Nothing new - it's been done for years, and years, and years. It's just a different (I'm not even sure new) technique.

Mmmm... that's good man/cow abomination. Thank god they killed it before it could be seen as a person.
Did anyone ever see a British film, O Lucky Man (1972 or so)? Remember when Malcolm McDowell took the wrong turn in that hospital and saw that half human half (pig?) crying in its bed? The only part of the movie I remember but to this day -- O...M...G!

I've got no beef with you personally but that is such bull, you're just another liberal kowtowing to the science establishment, always hoping to steer more tax dollars that way.

What in God's name are you talking about??? Please tell me how my post was "bull", "liberal", or "kowtowing" in any way.

All I was did was simply clear up what seemed to be a misconception about the science. A lot of the posters seemed to think (and the thread title implied) that these scientists when into the lab and created some new form of life that was (or would develop into) a mutant man/cow hybrid. That's not the case at all. This is an article about scientists growing human stem cells. The technique they used was to take cow eggs, remove all of the cow DNA, replace it with human DNA, and then chemically treat the egg to act as an embryo and divide.

If the cloned cells were viable and then allowed to mature into a being, the resulting being would be 100% human - no cow in there whatsoever. The article points out, however, that the created cells are not developmentally viable. The reason cow eggs (or non-human eggs in a general sense) are used is 1) out of ethical concerns and 2) economical - it's much easier and cheaper (don't have to pay a cow, liability from harvesting the egg, etc) to use non human eggs.

Finally, I pointed out that genetic cloning is nothing new (it's been done for decades). I even questioned if this technique using cow eggs to grow human stem cells was knew. I now know it's not new, seeing as how when I reread the article I noticed that it was published in 1999.

The article the OP posted from the BBC is 11 years old.

Any advances yet? Haven't heard of any.

Since the linked article is dated from 1999, and the DNA had been removed from the cow's cell, exactly what is it that you are arguing?

I'm not a biologist (I'm a physical chemist by training), so I don't follow this field too closely. However, I would image the field of stem cell research has advanced light years in the last 11 years.

This article describes a technique that 11 years ago was groundbreaking. Today, you might find it as a simple lab experiment in any Junior level genetics course at your local college.
