How many of those 40% are in households with two parents that never got married?
I don't know off the top of my head, but I have read in many places that this trend is rising fast, so it certainly accounts for some of the 40% the OP is wringing his/her hands over.
It is preferable for a child to have two parents that are married and living together for the obvious reasons. However, just as long as the taxpayer isn't expected to pay for them it is their choice to have babies out of wedlock. Unfortunately, we have far too many giving birth out of wedlock over and over knowing full well that the rest of us will have to foot the bill for them.
Stop moralizing! Every choice is equally good. 2 mommie, 2 daddies, 2 daddies and 1 mommy, 2 mommies and 1 daddy. 1 mommy no daddy, 1 daddy no mommy.... Well you get the point. 1 mommy and 1 daddy is simply repressive!
No welfare, no SNAP, no TANF, no child care, no Section 8.....nothing.
If you're gonna spread 'em, take the responsibility that comes with it. Don't come crying to me for help!
You do realize all of those programs you listed above are NOT only for single parents. There are MARRIED couples including the elderly on those programs?
