When I go and buy a loaf of bread with my own money I pay the actual price and nothing more. Usually about a $1.20..........When someone uses food stamps taxpayers pay what the store charges for the loaf of bread plus all the stuff listed above. It wouldn't suprise me a bit if a loaf of bread bought by food stamps was really $50 or so.
Are you certain about that? It does not make any sense to me. If I had to pay the government more to sell food than I take in I would go out of business. In a normal scenario, granted NYC is seldom normal, the government incurs all of these costs and pays them out of the taxes you pay. So while that loaf of bread actually costs the tax payer $50, the store pays the supplier it's normal cost and is reimbursed by the Food Stamp agency it's normal retail value, plus a small handling fee (maybe). This process does not change the food distribution cycle and the excess costs are absorbed by the government and paid for with your taxes as a cost of services. Again, those inflated costs are governmental costs, much like those $150 screwdrivers or $450 hammers the Air Force was buying, just add $50 loaves of bread to the tally of government efficiency.

The US has such a massive over supply of food due to the massive agricultural subsidies that the industry is always lobbying for more food stamps to encourage more consumption to help eat up (pun intended) the over supply.
I read an article that said food prices rose significantly in the first quarter of 2010. They blamed the freeze in Florida for rising produce prices. But I wonder if the rapidly growing use of food stamps has anything to do with this? It's simple supply and demand. With Millions of Americans now swiping their food stamp cards to pay for groceries food is artificially flying off the shelves that would sit there otherwise. I don't see how this could not cause inflation. If food sales were down due to the economy the prices would be going down not up..
If I am correct that food stamps are causing food prices to go higher...The working class who struggle to get by yet do not qualify for food stamps should have nothing but the deepest animosity towards food stamp users.

Anyway you look at it that loaf of bread cost $50. Doesn't matter who paid for it.
I just use $50 as an example. Don't know for sure how much it costs. I guarantee it is a lot more than just paying cash.

As opposed to food growing stale when folks were earning money? During economic good times was everyone on a diet and then suddenly decided to binge eat when they lost their jobs?
The discussion isnt quantity of food, its the price of that food..

The Obama stimulus bill indeed included increased food stamps. Besides this, with unemployment rate extremely high, what would make you think there isnt an increase in food stamps..
