The Democratic Party is one of two major contemporary political parties in the United States, along with the Republican Party. The party's modern liberal platform is largely considered center-left in the U.S. political spectrum.[5][6][7] It is one of the world's oldest political parties and boasts the lengthiest record of continuous operation in the United States. The party contains the most registered voters of any political organization in the world as of 2004, with 72 million voters.[8][9] Polls taken over the last decade indicate that roughly 35% of American voters self-identify as Democrats.[10]

Historically, the party has favored farmers, laborers, labor unions, and religious and ethnic minorities; it has opposed unregulated business and finance, and favored progressive income taxes.

Today, Democrats advocate more social freedoms, affirmative action, balanced budget, and a free enterprise system tempered by government intervention (mixed economy). The economic policy adopted by the modern Democratic Party, including the former Clinton administration, has been referred to as the "Third Way".[16] The party believes that government should play a role in alleviating poverty and social injustice and use a system of progressive taxation.

Professionals, those who have a college education and whose work revolves around the conceptualization of ideas, have supported the Democratic Party Academics, intellectuals and the highly educated overall constitute an important part of the Democratic voter base. Academia in particular tends to be progressive. In a 2005 survey, nearly 72% of full-time faculty members identified as liberal, while 15% identified as Republican.

The goverment of the United States of America is supposed to be there to protect its citizens from force and fraud, nothing more and nothing less.

What the republican and democrat parties have done is perverted the ways of our founding fathers and crucified our Constitution.

What should be done is both the republicans and democrats should be gotten rid of, along with 99%+ of the federal goverment at all levels and start over with the people being in charge instead of just a few elitist politicians and beauracrats.

The education part is a big deal to me. But to be honest I just want to be able to smoke weed whenever I want and not worry about getting pinched.

The reason public education in America was enacted was to ensure that the populace behaved themselves. In other words it was a form of control. It was not enacted for the noble purpose of assuring that the children receive an education.

I am well educated and have not always supported the Democratic party. The shift of the GOP toward the right, too far right, has pushed me to the Democrats, who are now representing more Moderate ideologies. Which, I believe, is where we need to be.

I always laugh at this. Especially when it involves "the intellectuals" that vote Democrat for handouts and who haven't graduated from high school or can't read or write. You know those people. They've been voting Democrat for decades. You guys throw money at the schools. Are more of them graduating? Have their conditions improved or are their handouts just bigger? You guys always forget to mention those "intellectuals" that the other intellectuals keep down and who also vote Democrat.

Giving "handouts" or providing educational opportunity to poor people is bad while giving crop subsidies to millionaire farmers is good. Hand outs to Democrats is terrible and handouts to Republicans is good. According to the Republican dogma government money is wasted on the lower classes and should always be spent on the financial class. Than that has, gets and them that has nothing pays sales taxes.

This is why I disrespect Republicans and their corrupt Party.

There is little to no difference in the actions of the two parties.

That is why I vote for libertarians and or work to change the republican party to the correct verison of what the party is suppose to be like.
