The Vatican wants Catholics to know that not all stem cell research is a sin. To prove the point, it launched a first-ever joint initiative with a Manhattan-based company that's researching adult stem cell therapies -- and pledged $1 million in funding to seal the deal. The Catholic Church and anti-abortion groups oppose stem cell research that is done with embryos, which must be destroyed to collect the stem cells. Adult stem cells come from living, breathing people - which makes all the difference as far as the Vatican is concerned.
The church has always been in favor of adult stem cell research. The media and the opponents of the church's position, for some reason, dont ever make the distinction between embryonic and adult stem cell research. You only ever hear that the church and religious groups are against "stem cell" research, which gives the impression they are against all forms of stem cell research. I think it is very unfair since you misrepresent their position. I cant speak for other religious groups opposed to embryonic stem cell research but I bet they feel the same way. The only reason the church is doing this is because people are too stupid to actually do research on their own to find the church's position that it held the entire time on stem cell research and that the debate is sadly painted as an all or nothing proposition by supporters of embryonic stem cell research. Once a misconception is spread it becomes hard to break.
Exactly. No embryo is killed in adult stem cell research and I believe they are having better luck with adult stem cells.
The media reports this whole thing crazy--why I don't know. When my hubby wrote a letter to an editorial page against embryo stem cell research BUT FOR adult stem cell, his letter was edited to leave out the part being FOR adult stem cell research.
The majority of scientists believe that stem cells derived from embryos are the most flexible and the most promising. Except for Catholicism and some conservative Protestant groups, all the world's religions allow, even encourage, the use of stem cells, including embryonic stem cells, to save lives.
For eight years Bush, with the support of the Catholic Church, repeatedly vetoed the attempts by Congress, representing the will of the majority of the American people, to aid embryonic stem cell research. That long delay in working towards treatments and cures has caused immense suffering to people inflicted with the most devastating diseases.
The Catholic Church nor Bush nor anyone else has the right to impose their religious beliefs on others. Especially in matters of life or death.
Many churches and religions DO NOT support embryo stem cell research. It could lead to making babies just to use their stem cells, then destroying them. It would cheapen life.

Oh but YOU have the right to force the rest of us to subsidize your abortions, do you? Because that is what this boils down to. No one opposes the use of umbelical cord material, and you know that.
