U.S. 'secret war' expands globally as Special Operations forces take larger role

Plenty of other google references to this issue for those that don't like the source. So much for "peace and diplomacy".

"Beneath its commitment to soft-spoken diplomacy and beyond the combat zones of Afghanistan and Iraq, the Obama administration has significantly expanded a largely secret U.S. war against al-Qaeda and other radical groups, according to senior military and administration officials.

Special Operations forces have grown both in number and budget, and are deployed in 75 countries, compared with about 60 at the beginning of last year. In addition to units that have spent years in the Philippines and Colombia, teams are operating in Yemen and elsewhere in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia.
..
But Obama has made such forces a far more integrated part of his global security strategy. He has asked for a 5.7 percent increase in the Special Operations budget for fiscal 2011, for a total of $6.3 billion, plus an additional $3.5 billion in 2010 contingency funding."

Nothing like a little illegal violence to further the cause of truth and democracy and further undermine our Constitution.

Yep, these Ops have been around for a long time, and do help in getting actions done that otherwise could not or would not be done. They will not be going away anytime soon......doesn't matter who is in office.......

Problem is, those "actions" have no oversight and could lead us to install some despotic tyrant who terrorizes his people to the point they overthrow him and install a rabidly anti-American government. Or those "actions" could lead us to support some whacked out Islamic radical group that later bombs us.

Here's hoping the next time our off-the-book actions cause us some seriously painful blowback we take the opportunity to evaluate just what our "actions" obtained, instead of ignoring the result and repeating the same painful experience. However, given our feckless politicians and an American public awareness more attuned to minute sound-bites than investigative inquiry (helped, I know, by our education system) this is the last lesson we will take away from our "actions."

Good! Special Ops and increased Intel along with vigilant border and port security is the only effective way to fight global terrorism. I only hope Obama keeps his word about getting the troops starting to leave Afghanistan in 2011.

And how are special ops "illegal"? I guess you live in a world in which our enemies deliver fruit baskets and scented candles to your home, rather than dirty bombs and exploding jet aircraft. Let me know how that works out for you.

How do you reconcile these statements? Each sentence contradicts the other.

You support increased Special Operations, but then you only want us to secure ports and borders. Special Ops are not designed to secure our ports or borders. Special Ops are designed to take the battle to the enemy and stop it before it gets to our ports and borders.
