I think its a horrible idea. 1. They need to make it where any person that votes must know how to read and write in English. 2. You force people to vote they aren't going to care who they vote for you are going to get people going to the polling station and just punching a number or a name in because they have to. I love to vote it is my right as an American and I vote in even the smallest elections.
What if voting was made mandatory? Could it work? What are some pros and cons you can think of?
Obviously there would need to be some strict regulations. Logistically i'm not sure how it would be done, but I think it would be interesting.
Voting is a right. If people choose not to vote, first they shouldn't complain and second it's their right.
I know many people that have become citizens in this country over the last 20 years. All of them to a person couldn't wait until their first elections so they could vote. They appreciated the right. Too bad many Americans don't share their enthusiasm and joy. They just don't understand what a privilege it truly is. Sad for them.
But it shouldn't be mandatory. It would be nice to see higher voter turnout. But I think many people have become disallusioned with the politics of today and figure either way, you can't win.

Down Under, if you don't vote you only have to pay a fine of about $20 USD, though.
Personally, I think it's a better idea to eliminate the two party monopoly through getting rid of the Electoral College and thus offering more choices to the public to vote for than instituting compulsory voting in the US (not sure if that would be constitutional either.)
But you agree with forcing people to buy health insurance to subsidize others? What's the difference here?
