Today I went to Jay's for floor tile and decided on porcelain and not ceramic. Has anyone selected one or the other and have a recommendation?

Speak of the porcelain devil. I'm having flooring installed. I went with porcelain because I liked the look and it seems to have good consistency.

The advantage to porcelian tile is the color is the same throughout the tile...ceramic on the other hand is just a coating and when you drop something that causes a chip/crack/etc...the ceramic tile will expose the underlying color...usually a dark brown color...

I looked at the laminate wood but was concerned about scratching over time from the sandy soil that eventually will be tracked in. Most of the house is already tile but the bedrooms are carpet and the previous owner had dogs and I have allergies so I wanted to remove the carpeting. The company also had cork but I figured it was too soft and the furniture would leave indentations in the flooring. I am a fan of laminate wood.

The house I bought has porcelain tile throughout the house (Foyer, Kitchen, Living, bathroom, dining, utility, etc...) and laminate wood in all of the bedrooms. So you may want to think about doing a mix.

If you haven't looked at laminate wood lately you would be surprised about not only how it looks but very much scratch proof. Little up keep as opposed to groat cleaning or replacing. Just a thought. I asked several of my neighbors that had tile about wood and I asked them if they could do it over again they said they would go with laminate.

The porcelain floors are just about completely installed in my house. I'm also doing laminate hardwood that's hand scraped for the look and texture of real wood. Went with a 20" size tile and had them laid in diamond form.
