I need some help making a decision about opening a small toy store in the Treasure Coast Square Mall for November, December, and January. Can anyone who lives in this area tell me a little about this mall. I know that there is a Toys R Us and Walmart right nearby but they don't sell the specialty toys that I would be selling. I want to know if this is a popular mall and if the people who live in the area support small local businesses or do they buy only on price. I would be the only toy store in this mall for the holiday season. Does anyone out there have any advise for me? Is there any money to be made there or does everyone shop at Walmart?

I don't want to sound too negative, but everyone I know personally looks in the mall & buys in Walmart except for clothes that are on sale or clearance. I'm not saying nobody buys there, but with the economy the way it is right now, think hard!! I hear the rents there are astronomical too so do thorough research!!

It seems that people are buying more on price now than before & getting the most for every buck as well as cutting back on "unnecessaries"....!!

Good luck!!

there is a lot of traffic at the mall during the holiday season, but i do think that consumer spending will be down this christmas due to economic uncertainty. with that being said, if your rent is not too high people do buy for their children at christmas time and if you have a specialty market it might be worth considering. you would have to crunch the numbers to see if it is worth it or not. long range, i would definitely not consider starting a new business because the economy has not even gone into its slump yet, which will probably happen when the layoffs start after the holidays.

That mall is loaded with teenagers most of the time. Are they your target market? A lot of crime there too.

Thanks for the very helpful replies to my inquiry about opening a store in the Treasure Coast Mall. I have decided not to open up for this holiday season. I am still hoping to move to Port Saint Lucie and open a business of some sort there. I have owned and operated my own toy store in Newton, Massachusetts for the past 16 years and it is now time for a change. A friend of mine owns a house in Port Saint Lucie and I can stay there while I get familiar with the area. I was wondering if anyone has any more advice about the general economy in Port Saint Lucie area. Who are the major employers in the area? Is there a good hospital in the area? I noticed when I was there in September that QVC and Tropicana had facilities there. Is there anything that I should be aware or or beware of if I am thinking about relocating permanently to Port Saint Lucie in order to get away from the harsh New England weather and unfriendly people here? Thanks so much for your help and insights!!! -Alison

I wouldn't count on QVC. They are laying off people.

There is a lot of crime there. I wouldn't let my guard down there. Make sure your car is locked and nothing is visible.

Well that goes without saying for ANYWHERE you park your car in public!! There's been car break-ins even at the "ritzy" Garden's Mall.

The way you posted I thought maybe there were rapes or shootings or other violent crimes that I didn't know about!!
