"Personal Preference" is not totally accurate and here is the real bottom line

There are advantages and disadvantages to each sanitizer. Using salt makes your skin feel very soft.

Many people who develop sensitivities to a chlorine pool make the decision to switch to salt water pools. While salt water pool systems produce chlorine naturally, they do not require the additional pool chemicals, such as stabilizers or algaecides, needed for chlorinated pools. The chlorine levels in salt water pools are also lower than in chlorinated pools, reducing the occurrence of chlorine-sensitive allergies.

To prevent damage to the salt water pool, you need to run the pump 24/7. People who are use to chlorinated pools often don't realize this and turn off the pump after eight hours, causing damage to the system.

Salt water pools make sense for people who want to save money over the duration of pool ownership. They are a better option than chlorinated pool systems for people who have reactions to chlorine or other chemical sanitizers, like bromine. Finally, they are a logical choice if you want to cut out the chemical maintenance necessary to keep a pool looking beautiful.
