My wife and I visited the Treasure Coast last week. People were swimming in Jupiter and Hobe Sound but mostly just sunbathing and beach walking in Vero Beach. I realize that Florida, and not Florida alone, had an unusually cold winter this year. That said, what months of the year typically provide good ocean swimming in Vero Beach (say, with water temperature above 70 or 71 degrees F.)?

Usually the water temp is OK for swimming from March - beginning of January even for Florida residents. Some of our tourists from the North who are used to swimming in 60 degree waters swim all year. We had had really mild winters for years till this year. Once you live here awhile you wait for the ocean temp to be at least 75 to actually swim in and not just wade in. I was out on the beach this winter in hoody and jeans and still freezing when others were in swimsuits. My S-I-L from Iowa wore her winter coat to beach one day in March this year when she was here. The breeze can be very chilly if wind is strong.

Thanks for this informative post, Rabflmom; it tallies with my recent impressions. The problem with backyard swimming pools is that you're like a goldfish in a small bowl. For ocean swimming in February or March, maybe it's time to lay out cash for a wet suit!
