Hi, I am a single 28-yr-old female moving to Portland in a couple of weeks. I really like an apartment on Cumberland Ave between Preble & Brown, but I am concerned that it may not be a safe area to be walking around at night. I'm not much of a night owl, but I am sure there will be numerous occasions when I will be walking back to the apartment by myself after dark from restaurants etc.

I am also planning on parking my car at a garage close by, and am wondering if cars often get broken into in that area.

What do you think? I'm still in the Midwest and so I don't have the option of walking around to get a feel for the area before I move, so I'm counting on the community's input!

I'm not sure I'd want to live in that area, but I'm not sure. Can you check with the police department's website? Maybe they have a crime map?

I agree with lawmom, that wouldn't be an area I would choose to live. I wouldn't be comfortable walking around at night that is for sure. North Deering or Deering center near Deering High school are 2 safe areas to consider, Brighton Avenue area is also nice. Portland is a pretty safe City and most areas are perfectly fine but I would stay clear of Cumberland Ave/Preble street, that is just my opinion. Good luck with your search Baxter Boulevard area are also nice.

The West End is nice, too -- not far from downtown at all (I walk there all the time), although I wouldn't walk home from downtown by myself at night.

Here, take a look at the police department, ask them all the questions regarding your neighborhood. Even though Portland seems pretty safe, it certainly has some areas best to be avoided at night.

Check out the East End/Munjoy Hill area, too. It's a safe, quiet neighborhood with a great vibe and walkable to downtown.
