Hello, my husband and I are considering moving to Portland this summer. We have a one yr old and two dogs. My parents live in Tigard and we would be working in the Pearl area. We are looking to rent for a year or two first. Want to be in an area where we can take mass transit and is accessible to good daycare and parks for the dogs. We have a budget of up to $2k per month. Any suggestions?? Thanks!

I have a toddler and I live near Multnomah Village, a neighborhood about halfway between Tigard and the downtown Pearl area. There are a lot of cute little shops and restaraunts. There's a great toy store (Tinker Toys) and a nice playground to play at. Nearby is Gabriel Park, which is HUGE and the SW Community Center is located there too. Hillsdale is a neighborhood down the road, where I like to shop at a grocery co-op called Food Front. Rent is pretty reasonable in this area. We pay $900 for a modest 2-bedroom apartment. Mass transit is excellent in Portland in general. You can take the 44 from Multnomah Village to downtown in about 20 minutes. Not too shabby.

BTW, Gabriel Park also has a dog park. Lots of day care in the area, too.

2K/mo. you can live in the Pearl. There must be tons of daycare around between Goose Hollow and The Pearl. If you need more park than Forest/Washington Park I'm not sure if anywhere else in Oregon will work for you . All of your mass transit options are represented in that area: busses, streetcars, light rails, even a tram (of limited use as transportation but great fun). FWIW.

Orenco Station neighborhood, or Orenco Gardens (we live in Orenco Gardens with a one year old) in Northeast Hillsboro.

Right on the MAX line (easy transit to the Pearl). Very pedestrian and bike friendly. Tons of parks and several cool dog parks nearby, including the Hondo Dog Park (Google it). Lots of day care options within walking distance (Goddard School, Kinder Care, Learning Years, Hillsboro Christian). Great area, we love it here.

Downsides - lot sizes tend to run small (they have higher housing densities near light rail), and you might want to check the drive to your parents' house during rush hour to make sure it's not too far for your preference. Hillsboro to Tigard can be 10-15 minutes, or it can be 30-40 minutes, depending on time of day & distance.
