Does anyone know of a midwifery/birthing center in Portland or near the area? My husband got a job there and we are contemplating relocating the whole family - our son is just about two and I am 3 months along with our 2nd. We want a midwife and have a great one here. Are there any or many to choose from? Does Portland accept a "natural" way of living such as holistic medicine?

Look at the "Ads by Google" that appear right on this thread. I have heard of the Andaluz Waterbirth Center. Or just Google Portland Midwifery and see what comes up.

Portland has one of the biggest and oldest naturopathic schools in the US.
National College of Natural Medicine: A Naturopathic School and Classical Chinese Medicine School located in Portland, OR - NCNM

No idea where you're coming from, but outside of, say, Berkeley or Boulder or Sedona, it'd be hard to find a city with a stronger alt health scene.

Thanks sayulita - I will definitely do a google search (as I already have) but google and real people are so different!

PNW-type-gal - that is awesome to hear! Thanks for the reply. I am coming from West Texas...nothing about this place is natural. We hate it here, it's the desert - bitter cold in winter and suffocating heat in summer, constant blowing sand (literally) and most people look down on you for being holistic (around here you are a "tree hugger" and not taken seriously).

I feel safe to say that you will find Portland to be pretty much the polar opposite of most of West Texas.

You might ask your current midwife if she has (or could get you one) a recommendation for the Portland area. You will definitely find what you're looking for, but you may be overwhelmed with the number of them out there. Oregon, and especially Portland, is very welcoming towards alternative care. You'll be fine!

Jeesh, I met my first Midwife at Portland Kaiser Permanente in 1971. OHSU has a Nurse Midwife program. You should have no problem finding the care you desire.

After retiring I got into genealogy. Among my discoveries was a great grandmother who was a Midwife in Norway.

Thanks all for the replies. I'm feeling much better about this move now! One last question, totally not related, but is Tigard a safe area for a young family? That is where my husbands office is located so we are thinking of living there until we learn the town and determine where we would fit best. Want to make sure it is safe for us!

Yes, Tigard is a safe area. Portland in general is very safe. As in any metropolitan areas, we have our "iffy" places, but on the whole you needn't worry about your safety here.

You will be fine.

Take care. A move is never easy, more exhausting in pregnancy.
