Hello to all you interesting and helpful Portlanders! How are you all doing this evening? I hope well. Okay, to get to it. I was wondering what it is that makes Portland seem almost like a bargain compared to the other West Coast cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. I figured that for one, Portland does not reside directly on the Coast, and that could take away some of its monetary value, but I didn't think that could make up for the entirety of the significant difference. What makes Portland so affordable, you guys?? They say when something is too good to be true, it usually is. Someone prove this old saying wrong?

There are more employment opportunities in the cities you mention.

What Nell said. And the weather is better is SF and LA and Seattle is a bigger metro area. Portland is a small small world. Trust me

Yeah Portland is a smaller city. Granted, it is a lot bigger then Des Moines.

Des Moines metro: 563 thousand
Portland metro: 2.2 million

I can understand with regards to the weather in CA. But why is Seattle bigger? could it be due to its location by the water? I mean why didn't Portland become as large as Seattle? Its an interesting question to ponder on.

Portland is 4 times as big as DSM, and has many, many more things to due nature-wise and entertainment-wise. So I'm certainly not worried about its size. The thing that worries me is the job economy. But at least I work in the health care field. I hope that helps me.

Does Seattle have better weather than Portland? I thought it was worse, but of course I could be wrong.

I think the economy in DM is very good. That is one thing about the midwest is they have good jobs. DSM, MSP, etc, are good places for jobs and raising a fam.

I think Seattle very slightly worse weather but not noticeable. but this is coming from someone who hasn't been there (only once). Just from what I read.

Yes the economy in DSM is doing really well. And the cost of living is pretty decent. And if I was interested in raising a family I might consider staying here, but I'm more into adventure and newness and the general vibe and scenery of the West Coast. I hope Portland isn't "going down-hill" as I have heard a couple people mention on other posts...

Seattle has Boeing and Microsoft isn't that far away. (Redmond may even be part of the Seattle census figures.)
And the Seattle campus of the University of Washington (Pac 10) would be like adding Eugene, OR to Portland.

Seattle has NFL Pro Football team and a MLB team
