Out on a friend's boat and got doused with a wave early on. Wet clothes apparently don't dry here! Brr!

Other than that, awesome time seeing the Waterfront fireworks, bridges, and a real live beaver!

Beaver and nutria are a plague for those with boat houses and floating homes. Beaver chew, nutria poop.

I was cold yesterday, too. Then I turned the AC off.

They climb on or in floating structures to chew them and thus don't leave a lot of droppings. Nutria want to make dens and leave droppings all over.

The beaver is apparently wreaking havoc on our friends' dock. He looked cute when we saw him, though

I had the same reaction on my first July 4th here, in 1998. After moving here from the South, I was surprised to have to put on a light jacket, as it was cool, overcast, and lightly misting. Since then, there have been several chilly July 4ths.

My wife and I were in Florence a few years ago (the one in Italy, not Oregon). We saw what looked like a rat swimming across the Arno River. A local woman corrected us: "Not rat -- nutria!" Those creatures do get around. Actually, I think they're originally from South America, and they stowed away on ships.

I think someone thought they were cute and imported them as pets.

Years ago they were all over the stream between Tektronix and Nike's pond.

I have seen Nutria happily swimming in the waters of the Rhododendron Gardens. At least that's what I was told they were. I thought they were really large rats at first but someone told me they were Nutria.
