I'm a Portland journalist and I'm working on a story about the rental market in Portland. In recent years it has become nearly as tight as in cities like New York, with very low vacancy rates, making it increasingly difficult to find a place to rent. Do you have any good stories about the lengths you (or someone you know) went to in order to find an apartment or rental house? Did you witness any over-the-top behavior? Any fights? Did a landlord want a bribe or special favors? Any story about craziness in apartment hunting would be really helpful. Thank you!

I don't have an interesting story, but coming from NYC, I am shocked that you don't have rental agencies here. Instead, you have $100+ application fees at apartment buildings. This would be unheard of in New York.
