Hello, I will be visiitng portland ( downtown area ) I hear that portland has great bus transportation and train/trolly/subway system. I will be flying there and will not have a car.
Is it true that portland is a very friendly, walkable city?

Any info would be appreciated. Thank you

Yep, we have short blocks and it is pretty easy to get just about anywhere on foot or a little bit of navigating by bus or train. It is a very simple grid the city is laid out on, and you can always stop at most hotels and ask the people working here any questions, plus there are the information people in he green shirts who are paid to give directions and city information.

So what are you hoping to do in Portland while you are here? Anything you are really interested in?

no subway, but you can go under the city.

I've never done that in any city

Instead of a subway we have surface light rail, a couple of streetcar lines, and an extensive bus system.

It is a very walkable city. This is why I love Portland so much, it's very accessible.

Where in the city can you do this? I know Washington Park station is underground.

Underground Tours. Mostly about the legendary Shanghai era.

Seattle also has a great underground tour. Actually, a better one, IMO. The city was actually buried, and rebuilt upon. Where Portland's is just an underground tunnel system.

The Washington Park stop is underground because the lightrail is in a tunnel at that point, Washington Park is at the top of a hill.

If you're a railroad nerd, you might be amused to know that by some measures it's the "deepest" transit station in North America. The distance the elevators travel from the platform up to the zoo is roughly equivalent to a twenty-six story office building.
