Would someone care to suggest online rental listings for Portland, please? I have been frequenting craigslist, but not much there. Also, what are names of fun, trendy neighborhoods that would be a reasonable drive to OHSU? Price range < $1000/month. Thanks!

Too many neighborhoods that meet that description to list. There are Sellwood, Buckman, Sullivan's Gulch, Alberta Arts, Sunnyside, The Pearl District, NW and Downtown to name the ones I can think of offhand. You can google "Portland Neighborhoods" and pick any you might like. When you have it narrowed down, you can ask specific questions.

I don't know of any online rental websites that would be any more help than Craig's List. What you see on CL is pretty indicitive of what is available. There is a 3% vacancy rate in Portland and most of the good stuff goes within a day or two from "For Rent" signs put out by landlords.

One way to go is to contact rental management companies and find out if they have any availabilities now or coming up. There are large ones that manage many buildings in the types of neighborhoods you are describing.

OHSU may have a list of landlords/buildings who recruit OHSU students/staff as tenants. Ask your manager if they have such a resource.

Craigslist, zillow, and HotPads - Map Search for Real Estate, Apartments and Houses for Rent, Foreclosures and Homes for Sale are the ones that I use, although you will see quite a bit of overlap between these as many property management companies will post the same properties to many sites.

Many times its not an option, but the good ol drive around and look for For Rent signs is always an option. With a tight rental market here I imagine some people can just put up a sign and get pretty of responses, so they might not even be listing it anywhere.

I don't really recommend this but I have had people wanting to rent just knock on my door or the doors of my neighbors asking if we know of any upcoming vacancies in the building. I just give them my landlord's phone number. He used to have a waiting list but found he could just put up a sign in within hours the rental unit would be gone.

He will not hold an apartment. You take it when you see it or it goes to the next person. That's pretty typical in my area.
