I've seen a lot of studies like this and most are bogus. Having lived all over the USA including Portland this study is spot on Especially about Portland both Portland and ESP Vancouver are getting really bad.

From the study: "*Editor’s Note: BusinessWeek.com ranked 50 of the largest metros based on a variety of factors including depression rates, suicide rates, divorce rates, crime, unemployment, population loss, job loss, weather, and green space."

What they failed to do is come to the cities and interview actual people to find out how happy they are.

Instead they did it via spreadsheet.

When my mom told her boss I was moving to Portland back in the late 70's he said "Oh, your daughter is moving to the weepy city." He said that because he thought it rained a lot, not because people were sad. Maybe Forbes got it wrong.

We're mostly sad because we have to leave our nice comfortable suburbs to go explore Portland's Food Cart scene.

Oh, that "study" must be spot on.

I know that when I go to cities like New Orleans and Las Vegas, I can just feel the depression all around me. I probably could hear it if all the music and the revelers could just be tuned out.

The article forgot to include alcohol consumption, when people drink that much it is hard to be sad. I was anything but sad living in Portland.
