Our police will make you believe in the speed LIMIT! I am not saying that we all obey but pushing it more than 5 mph can be costly.

So I'm guilty on about 3 out of 7 charges there..like I said before, adjust and adapt.

I too welcome you to the PNW.

If you want to experience a taste of driving as it used to be for you visit the Bay Area.

I will say though, infinitely more polite than you would see Back East, the first time I put on my turn signal and the car in the next lane actually slowed down to let me over I didn't even know how to react
Honestly though the worst drivers in the Portland metro will often have Washington plates. Seriously, I hear a lot of people make this comment--probably most of them are from just over the river in Clark County.

Freeway driving is different here, because you have people outside the city who will sit in the fast lane going 60 in a 65 mph zone. And they are either stoned or just not paying attention that there's a line of cars looking to go around them. Compared to even Seattle, people drive fairly slow on the freeway--when you see going far above the speed limit zooming by cars it's the exception not the rule. Compared to say Los Angeles, where you'll be going 80 and being passed by people going over 90.

If anything though drivers are polite for the most part.

Last month I had to ask my DH to slow down in the HO lane on I-580, he was going 80.

I was wondering if that was the case out there as stringent enforcement of a "Zero Tolerance" policy tends to train a population quite effectively, you typically see that in small towns more than you would in major Metros though. Very interesting.

There didn't seem to be a very large or at least visible Police presence in the area at all. I think I saw Portland's finest all of 3 times in 10 days, I saw more Gresham PD in the day I spent over there than the total of all other areas. Is that more of reflection of the state of Gresham or the Portland Metro in general?

Humm, Gresham has been having issues with gangs lately. That is not to say that there is a major gang problem but any gang violence is a concern.

Gresham is the Multnomah County seat, the County Sherriff's headquarters is located there. If the police car was colored green then you saw a county car, perhaps headed 'home'. Gresham police cars are black & white with blue lettering while Portland Police cars are predominantly white.

Yes, indeedy!! In CA, and most other states, there is very low probability that a cop will ticket someone for 72 mph in a 65 zone....here they will.
