After my recent trip back to Oregon, I have come to terms that is where we belong, so my wife and I begin our one year countdown to moving back to Portland. Figuring that should give us both plenty of time to save money, continue job experience in NYC before making our trek back across the country to where we belong.

Indeed it does and I can't wait to start planning the move back. Plus, having the one year countdown gives us a chance to make the most of it in nyc and enjoy the last year here. Also we want to try and make a few trips to places like DC, Boston, and Virginia where I grew up.

Most New York skills fit those places better than Portland. I would guess lower case nyc refers to NYC or New York City.

The type of jobs I have had can be applied to any city I work in, so that won't be an issue. And yes, nyc means New York City.

When I graduated from college my Mother advised me to work for a couple years away from Portland, then if I wanted to return I would have significant experience on my resume. I too went to NYC.

As much as I am missing Portland, I am still happy to make this move. I have a degree in architecture and was finding nothing in Portland so we moved to NYC only to get a short unpaid internship. I ended up stumbling into real estate and have been cutting my teeth in a much bigger and tougher market than Portland, so it will be nice to return with the experience I have here and use it in Portland.

I think Manhattan is a great life experience. I did it when I was 20. First time I ever heard the term "efficiency" apt...lol I lived on the upper East side (76 and York).....tiny studio and it was over top of a noisy health club.
I am very glad I got to experience it when I was young. The danger of NYC is that once you live there a long time, it can be hard to adjust/scale down your expectations of other cities. NYC is tops in a lot .....and it is a city that never sleeps. I brought back a boyfriend when I moved back to DC....but he'd lived in NYC so long that he couldn't take the slower pace of DC. He ended up back in NYC where he remains to this day.
