EnricoV, just thinking about what you said about moving to escape allergies; I knew someone in Florida who had terrible allergy/sinus problems and on the advice of her physician moved to Arizona--they got worse! And she moved back to Florida promptly.

However, though I do acknowledge the list pdwpdx has put forth, there can be and are severe problems in any metropolitan area; there is plenty to be unhappy about anywhere. I agree that Portland is not a utopia, but to me there is much more to be happy about here than in many areas of the country.

I can make an "unhappy" list for West Central Florida, too: horribly oppressive summer weather with depression from having to remain indoors in the air conditioning at least 6 months out of the year, daily violent summer thunderstorms, fire ants, multitudes of mosquitoes, snakes, sinkholes, the annual threat of hurricanes, substandard public schools, poor-to-no public transportation, non-pet-friendly apartment rentals, powerful conservative politicians and press, low wages, underemployment, overcrowding, lack of sufficient infrastructure to handle influx of transplants particularly in regard to water shortages; need I go on? Because I can, believe me.

One can be unhappy or happy anywhere. Sumeba miyako.
