I will be choosing a grad school soon for a Master of Finance program, and one of my schools of choice is Oregon, with the plan to move to Portland after graduation. However, I have heard that the job market in Portland is quite bad. How is the job market for finance careers? Is it still tough to find a good job?

The job market in Portland is no longer bad.

My question is what do you plan to do with your degree and what is your current employment history? The best route, IMHO, is to start at one of the "Big Four" accounting firms. During summer breaks line up an internship. Work as a Jr in an accounting firm is grueling, not unlike that of an intern physician. However, once you have a CPA your options open up. Many, most, Jr's find employment at firms/industries they have audited so review the audit clients of the accounting firm you work at. Take a look at the annual reports for your long term target employers to see who signed off on their annual report.

Keep in mind the fact that different offices of the Big Four are very different. For example when my daughter graduated she was hired by EY in San Jose- they had a lot of high-tech clients. Her classmate who went to work for them in the midwest found herself auditing firms in the automotive industry.

Before you commit to any graduate program contact their student outplacement office to see who attended their career day conferences for finance graduates. PM me and I will share my daughter's U.
