Each school gets exactly the same budget to work with.

The difference is that wealthy people make sure their kids do well. If they aren't happy with the school, they make sure administration knows about it, loudly. If their child lags, they hire tutors. My son went to a school in a very wealthy area and the school board would not provide any money for extras and the PTA paid for teacher's aides for every classroom and parents did a lot of volunteer work. Plus, the parents got together and paid for after school enrichment programs that the school district wouldn't pay for.

In poor school districts, the parents tend to not pay attention as long as their kids are not bothering them. They think that learning is the responsibility if the school and no one else. Some of them don't make sure their kids actually go to class and they don't monitor homework.

It's not the schools that are better, it is the parental involvement that is much more intense.

(and yes, I know that some lower income parents are serious about their kids in school, but in high income areas, it is every parent, not just a few of them)

Coming back to add this: a child can excel in a low rated school as long as the parent is actively involved and makes sure the child attends classes and makes sure the homework is done and understood each night. You can arrange it so your child gets the same education as the rich kids by providing the same parental support.

If it’s possible, depending on which part of LO, it could be faster to take 43 and join I5 near the South Waterfront. It’s about 20 minutes or so on 43, likely about the same once you’re on the freeway.

Yes, living in Portland proper will cut your commute, but there are reasons that people choose LO and put up with the drive to Adidas, Nike, Intel, etc. There are good schools and parent groups interspersed in Portland, Beaverton, Tigard, and other places, but EVERY school in Lake Oswego has strong parent support.
