Hello,

I am new to the forums here and I must say that I am very impressed with what I have read about Portland. I am currently living in Sin City, NV and I am soooo looking forward to moving out of here in the next 6 to 12 months. I am condsidering Portland as I am tired of the desert. I have been reading a lot of the postings here in regard to the housing and the cost of living. Well, some of you need toog try Sin City, if you want to talk about housing and the cost of living as we are #1 in forclosures nationwide and also for the first time in all the years that I have lived here we are now higher than the national average for umemployment. It is funny I here new people who come here gasp when they go shopping at the market cause everything has to be trucked in here. We are also ranked 14 in the highest tax paid as well. Anyway, I am going backward here so let me move forward. I would like to hear from people that are just regular folks like me. I am not rich and I am not looking to buy a house. I am a renter with a college education and a stable work history as well as a stellar credit score which seems to open many doors for me. I know that rents are cheaper in Portland as is the yealy income level. I am middle aged and to tell the truth scared to death of another move, but I want out of here and I want to go someplace where the seasons change. I am in the process of paying off all of my debts so that the only expenses I need to worry about are rent and standard living costs. Is the job market/economy really that bad that a guy cant find a job to live on? This is my one major concern, that I cant find a job that will pay my rent and standards costs of living and that is really all that I am concerned about!
The town is lovely from what I can see of the pics that I have looked at and it almost has the look of parts of New York City that I have seen.....you know the old stone look. Does anyone have any good sources for job research? I have read on the forums that the hard part for employers is actually finding people who want to work, and I for one am a go getter and not lazy by a long shot! Any help would be appreciated out there folks!

Thanks,

Darcknight

There is tremendous competition for even the lowest paying jobs and they are all low paying. Older people have it harder. You would be better off securing a job before you move here or move here with at least a year's worth of savings.

Don't fall for scams where you are asked for a fee in order for an agency to find you a job. Be very careful.

Man, that is pretty harsh to say the least! I would hate to think that Sin City is still the best place on the planet to be because of jobs which is why most people come here in the first place and it is why I came here to! there has just got to be someplace left in the USA where someone can go and live nicely at a low cost and not have to scramble around like a "rat" fighting for the most meanial of labor. This relocation thing is almost getting ridiculous from the get go! Thanks for your reply!

Hi Darcknight. Welcome to the Oregon forums!
with the job market, it depends a lot too, on what youre looking for. Many jobs are difficult to come by, but others are there for the taking for those who have the desire/work ethic/etc. Typically, they will be the lesser known jobs. I know one of our posters, her husband was offered a job here in Oregon, while he still was residing in Az. Another, from S.Carolina had to choose from a few different offers. Where Im at, we've hired several people from out of state based on their past work history/references/interviews and they did beat out Oregon natives that were younger. Truly, it does depend very much on what kind of work you do.
Always a good idea though, to have a job lined up before you move anywhere. Savings help too.
Best of luck to you!
Tiffany
