We are considering a move to Scappoose or St. Helens, but my husband works in Beaverton, near Walker and Cedar Hills BLVD. How far of a drive is he really looking at? When we map quested the distance, it said it would be about 47 minutes from St Helens to Beaverton, but a friend at his work told him today that she lives closer in than Scappoose and it takes her 45 minutes. Is she just a slow driver or is this commute really that long? I am wondering about both Cornelius Pass (good weather) and all the way around to HWY 26 (bad weather). Anyone have this same commute? Would you wish it on anyone?! Thanks!

MY DH commutes from Warren (between Scappoose and St. Helens) to Hillsboro. It can be anywhere from half an hour to 45 minutes, depending on traffic. He uses Cornelius Pass Road, generally, but if it's closed you could take some of the back roads or go around into the city. Mostly, it's the truck traffic that slows things down, they have to gear down due to the steep rise and fall. And then the snow and ice in the winter can be a problem.

The normal traffic isn't all that bad, compared to a large city, but Cornelius Pass is narrow, twisty, and plunges down to a stream on one side. There have been fatal accidents there, mostly due to black ice in the winter. There is a movement to get guard rails put in-- no telling if that will be successful.

To me, the commute isn't that bad, but I'm comparing it to L.A. or New York. The locals don't like it at all and complain about it pretty continually. If you read the past issues of the Spotlight (the local newspaper) on the web, that will give you more info.

Cornelius Pass is a twisty two lane road that goes over the top of the hills, at something like the 600' elevation - which gets a dusting of snow and ice frequently in the winter.

Driving during the off hours, it's common to run across some moron vastly exceeding the speed limit and "playing" - and in your lane as he/she comes around a sharp corner.

An alternative is Germantown Road (St. John's bridge, up to Skyline, down hill to Cornelius Pass Road). Not a favorite of trucks because of the intersection at St. John's Bridge Road.

To improve Cornelius Pass Road will take a LOT of money. I wouldn't count on that in my lifetime.
