Santa Clara University was where my son earned his black belt in Karate. What dissatisfied him was the closeness to home. He also wanted a better science experience, and University of Portland has outstanding science departments.

Please also notice that the University of California is slowly setting in the sun since most students cannot finish in four years unless they attend summer schools all over the country. This is too bad considering the high esteem everyone holds the University of California. I would have liked him to attend San Diego. I am not disappointed with Portland since the school has a good reputation in medical and legal schools for graduate study.

I agree that Santa Clara does not have a strong bio-science department. That said a colleagues' son attended Santa Clara and went on to medical school.

My daughter started college with the goal of becoming an engineer but she wanted a 'small' school. Santa Clara is a small school as engineering programs go. As it turned out although she was doing very well in engineering she didn't feel that it was a good fit for her. She was able to switch to SCU's School of Finance. What I particularly appreciated was SCU's relationships with the business community, she went from graduation to a career seamlessly.

My point is that a school needs to be big enough to accommodate a change in majors. I get that our students want to put some space between them and their parents but the primary concern should be the academic programs offered.
