Portland's overly hyped beloved Pok Pok couldn't cut it in LA.

I don't think it is overly hyped. I only skip Pok Pok because there are so many choices in PDX. The owner is doing something very special. Thai restaurants seem to be numbered in the millions. But authentic Thai street food is not that common in the USA.

If it's so good and special, why couldn't he make it in LA?

Because everyone in LA is on a champagne and vape pen diet.

Because L.A. is a truly international city that isn't gullible.

Keep scouring newspapers for ANYTHING negative you can find about Portland, maybe you'll find something worthwhile. Or you could better spend your energy trying to find somewhere you'll be happy instead of complaining about where you are now.

I think the nationwide stats are something like 4 out of 5 restaurants that open close within 1-2 years. The LA metro area is supposed to be one of the worst to open a new restaurant, especially one without a gimmick and not part of a chain. Generally it has less to do with the restaurant itself and more to do with location, style, customer base.

Not surprising he's been going on about how the market won't support upscale Asian food for some time now. Not to mention the whole restaurant industry is on the brink of a recession.

Fake ethnic food cooked by tatted white hipsters doesn't work in LA when you can get nearly every ethnic food in the world prepared by authentic nationals using home recipes brought from their countries. I'm not surprised it works in Portland because it's the whitest big city in the country.

And YET it is making it in New York? Because New York is NOT an international city?

Stupid thread because you'll NEVER get people to agree on matters of taste.
