Hello,

My husband and I are moving out to Portland from Fairfax Va next year. We are currently looking at apartments online and wanted to get an idea of where the good areas are located. We have both lived in cities before (Richmond VA and DC) so we are well aware that all cities have their good and bad neighborhoods. Our first choice for an apartment is Meadowland located at SE Naegeli Drive, Portland, Oregon 97236. We are also looking at the surrounding areas, like West Linn and Lake Oswego. Any advice you could provide would be very much appreciated!

I have been reading the gang activity threads...and now it seems like I am in a bad area. Looks like I will be looking somewhere else.

In Portland proper, streets starting with SE should be carefully examined for neighborhood, while streets starting with NW tend to be in good neighborhoods. This is VERY MUCH a generalization, however. West Linn and LO are considered to be the most affluent suburbs.

Try this site:

CrimeMapper

This is the city of Portlands crime statistics website.
It allows you to enter an address and look at the crime statistics for that area.
SE Naegeli Drive doesn't look so great.
These are mostly 1/2 mile grids, and if the crime area happens to be at a major street intersection, it can taint the whole neighborhood.
The little symbols will give you an idea which area of the neighborhood to stay away from.

Also if you google "Portland CGIS", you can look at the county assessors information for a particular property, including last sale price and taxes.
Very useful if you are looking to buy! You can also get aerial views to get a better idea of a location.

This is all public record.

There is a website called apartmentratings.com Although I haven't been a renter for 45 years the comments about buildings I am familiar with are consistent with my opinion. Of course you can always find a flamer or a friend of the manager posting, but where there are several similar comments over time you should consider them.
