What state do you live in? In PA, a pregnant woman and her child qualifies for medical assistance during the pregnancy. After the birth, the state covers the mother/baby for 1 year.

The great thing about Arizona Medicaid or the AHCCCS is that the eligibility requirements and rules are not handled under one program alone. Instead, it will divide its beneficiaries according to their category. For example, for low income families, pregnant women and children, they usually get AHCCCS through the Department of Economic Security offered by the state government.

To apply for AHCCCS, you will need to ask for an application form or you can simply download it from the internet fill it out and mail it back. After the AHCCCS have received your application form, they will give it to their eligibility specialist to review your application. They will search for health care program or programs that you and your family may qualify for.

So different name for the dept..worth a try. Income limits vary by state..some are surprisingly high.

Like mentioned, ask your wife's doctor about discount. We got 30% discount for paying all of the obgyn visits before birth ( at the second appointment ), and then got 30% discount in the hospital for paying the birthing costs right after birth. Good Luck.

Many years ago some friends of ours had a surprise third pregancy well after their first two children were born, and were in a similar situation. They contacted some teaching hospitals and the mom agreed to be observed by medical interns during the labor and delivery, which reduced the cost substantially.

Self pay. You will get a discount if paid by a certain date. Citibank has a killer deal right now 0% for 21 months on purchases. Be aware that if you plan to deduct Medical expenses on your taxes, you can only deduct what you actually pay for in said calender year, not what you are billed for. If you are clearing what you say and spread it out over 20 months, you should be fine.

For sure look into Medicaid and whatnot as well, that kind of goes without saying. The hospital will let you know your options.

Shop around for sure. There can be over $3,000 difference between hospitals when utilizing self pay. You want a hospital that will give you a print out on the spot of the cost and details.

Hospital stay should be approx 3,000. Doc approx 3,000. Round basic figures in my area if that helps. Good luck. Start saving now.

At her age the docs are going to want to do more tests than they would on a younger woman. She may be considered high risk because of her age...don't know if they still do it like that. Anyhow, the expenses might be higher than you'd think and a complicated birth is more likely.

It looks like Arizona has a complicated way of calculating income for medicaid eligibility, but looking at the chart, if you make 4k a month, your wife doesn't work and you have one other child, then she would probably be eligible. Health Insurance for Pregnant Women There's a link there to apply online.

Check with the doctor for a pregnancy package option including delivery. Do the same with the hospital and indicate self pay . I was in the same situation some years back and thankfully got it sorted out . I had preexisting knowledge going into that pregnancy a planned C-section was necessary so ensuring I got the right quote covering my bases was important. I paid around 2K for obgyn throughout the 9 months plus c sect delivery and 3K for hospital w/c-sect. Both requiring advance payment. Hospital was great in processing part of the bill which my insurance covered and was happy to receive a refund check for 1.5K back from the hospital.

And your wife is right there in the hospital if anything goes wrong. I think this is a great idea.
