How much are the costs for a birth at a hospital in America if you don`t have an insurance? Just curious. I am not pregnant and not in the states but i heard a unbelivable number...
I guess it would depend on how you gave birth. A natural birth in a birthing center with a midwife is going to cost significantly less than a C-section in a hospital. Most states also have medical coverage programs for pregnancies that can reduce / cover the cost.
my first csection I think was over $10,000. Not sure the exact # but I was in hospital for 5 days, and that includes all the docs that do anything to you or baby, the hearing tests they do, nursery, csection and that docs fees, and I'm sure I'm missing something. and that doesn't even include my OB's bill. Which here they do what they call a global charge. they bill the entire 8 or 9 months of appts and everything at the end. my first one was over $2,000. Then I had non-stress tests, lab work, additional docs that I needed to go to, so thats additional. now as I sit here and remind myself of all those damn bills, I get to do it all over again. going in for my csection next Thursday!
We self-payed and it was about $10'000 for standard prenatal care and vaginal birth, 2 nights hospital stay (one during labour, one after birth). That was with a 33% discount for paying all standard care in advance!
Wow..I have to admit, I heard it was expensive in USA, but never imagined that it was that much...we payed out of pocket, since insurance didn't kick in yet, and cost was cca.2500 usd.in hospital three days post birth.
Midwife for a homebirth including all prenatal care, birth and postnatal care was $2800 before insurance and around $1000 after. Hospital birth including all prenatal care, birth and postnatal care came to between $3000 and $5000 after insurance. I don't even want to think about what it would have cost without insurance.
and if there is a problem with the baby the nicu costs can reach into the hundreds of thousands in no time at all.
I was very lucky - my daughter didn't require any time in the NICU. However, I spent the five months prior to her birth (via C-section) in the hospital. Our total bill was that high - I think around 257K? (We had military insurance so our share was our annual premium of about $500 and co-pays of about $700).
