New parents can be overwhelmed taking care of a newborn, but one birth consultant thinks one way to help parents cope is by literally not cutting the cord.

Mary Ceallaigh, a birth consultant and doula from Austin, Texas, is preaching the benefits of “umbilical nonseverance” which involves letting the umbilical cord fall off naturally after birth. Ceallaigh, 47, says the practice is also called having a “lotus birth” can help mothers and babies bond.

I don't know...it seems more unnatural than natural to me..I'd be scared there was more chance for infections that way....though I DO believe the cord should be left on longer than it is, and not cut off immediately.

This isn't just waiting to cut the cord until it stops pumping blood (we did this with 2 of mine at the birthing centers where they were born)...this is carting around the placenta still attached to the baby. One of my kiddos didn't lose their cord stump for almost 3 weeks...no way would I have been willing to deal with an old nasty placenta that long.

Sorry, this practice is not one I would embrace.
