LONDON, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- A British woman who has had 18 miscarriages said she was finally able to give birth thanks to special treatments by a London doctor.

Angie Baker, 33, of Peacehaven, England, said she was able to give birth to a 7-pound baby girl Dec. 9 after 18 previous failed attempts because of treatment from Dr. Hassan Shehata at St. Helier Hospital in London, The Times of London reported Friday.

Being fertile wasn't her problem. Wow.

What lousy journalism! The story doesn't even hint at what her problem was or what the treatment was that made completing a pregnancy possible.

NoExcuses, infertility is not just the inability to conceive, but also the inability to complete a pregnancy. Recurrent miscarriage is considered infertility and there are reproductive endocrinologists who specialize in this area of infertility.

A woman who has never conceived or who has never had a baby has "primary infertility" while a woman who has had one or more babies but is unable to conceive or carry any subsequent pregnancies has "secondary infertility." This woman had primary infertility.

I read a more complete story on line which explained it was a case of her body rejecting a pregnancy and the doctor used steroids before she got pregnant
while most docs use them once the pregnancy is established.

Oops !! You're right.

But what I meant was she has no problem conceiving.

I'm just amazed that she went through the pain--mental and physical--of 18 miscarriages.

Actually oral steroids are usually given in the week or two PRIOR to an IVF transfer and that's pretty standard, at least in America, so that's hardly "new." There is a new field emerging called reproductive immunology and it's pretty fascinating. There are several mechanisms by which a woman's body can reject an embryo, lots and lots of theories, and some treatments for these various conditions are considered standard while others are considered experimental. That's why it would have been nice if the journalist had made a stab at explaining the specifics.

Immunology IS fascinating, isn't it?

Ah, if I could go back and get a do-over, one of my top choices would be to pursue being an immunologist (in the research sector, not clinical practice).

It really is, and it's especially interesting with regard to reproduction, because a woman's body has a built in mechanism to NOT reject the embryo as "other" but sometimes this fails or is overidden by the body's autoimmune system.

It's also an area of a lot of controversy as doctors fight it out over differing theories. I watch the volley that goes on between different doctors and realize that this is what happens and has happened historically in medicine -- it's the way new discoveries are made. So many of the things we take for granted now were once new ideas that got ridiculed by the old guard of the day.
