We are retired and will be relocating to the Prescott area. We are looking to buy a place with at least 2 acres.

We are considering some homes in the Dewey-Humboldt area

If you are looking for acreage, then you have a few options:

Dewey: About 40 minutes to Prescott. Some areas have good flowing wells, some have poor flowing wells. Some areas are not well maintained while others are kept up nicely. Mostly rolling hills with scrub vegetation.

Prescott Valley: North of Hwy-89A are acreage properties. Almost all of this area has good water. Some areas are site-built only, some are a combination of mfg and site-built. Mostly flat with native grass (brown most of the year).

Chino Valley: Mostly good flowing water, but can vary by location. Mostly flat with native grass. There are some hillside locations.

Williamson Valley: Water varies by location. Terrain is mostly rolling hills, some flat areas, vegetation varies from native grass to juniper bushes.

One thing about DEWEY, you should research before you buy, the areas of Dewey [SIZE=2]have lead, arsenic and other nasty stuff in the soil due to the contaminated soil caused by the Iron King Mine and Humboldt Smelter. It's nasty stuff and kids have been playing in it. The EPA listed it as one of the top 10 spots in the US

The contamination is also in the air, you breathe it when it is windy, bad news for the residents:

The Iron King Mine area is very localized. Dewey is far larger than the Iron King Mine area.

Here's the affected area:
Iron King Mine Area

Here's Dewey as a whole.
Greater Dewey-Humbolt

The water to the south of 169 and to the east of the Agua Fria river (the dark spot) is good. The water to the west of 69 is spotty.

Pros of living in Dewey-Humbolt:

1. If you love country living, this is the place.

2. Wide open spaces (very beautiful).

3. If you want a horse and keep a stable, you can.

Cons of living in Dewey-Humbolt:

1. The only entertainment there is Billy Jack's Bar & Grill.

2. Only "classy" restaurant there is Leff-T's Steakhouse.

3. Too expensive to live.

4. If you are NOT into country living, this would not be for you then.

Pull up a map of the area around Prescott. There are many small areas and towns around that offer country style living.

I made D/H my choice ten years ago. I haven't regreted it since. I have a mobil home on 4.8 acres. I'm semi retired commuting from my job to home on the weekends. I could of chose Prescott? Since I'm from a city the size of Prescott I chose to down size my way of living, that meant a small town . If I need something that I can't find here in Dewey, a drive to the city is allways a reminder why I chose small town living. My $.02

While I am sure that mining sites tend to leave problems I don't see anything at the EPA site for AZ even showing anything at all.
Where are you getting your information that it's a "top 10 spot" ?

Here is where I looked at the EPA and I don't see anything about it.
