Husband and I are looking at relocating from VA to Prescott and need info on purchasing hay for our horses. Is there grass hay available local or is it all Alfalfa in and around Prescott? Thanks all!

Call Olsen's Grain (928) 445-1664. They should be able to tell you.

I don't think you'll have any problems getting hay or anything else regarding the care and upkeep of horses in this area as with most areas of Arizona. Hardly a day goes by when you don't see them out and about on the trails and in horse trailers. After all this is the great Southwest and they are a part of everyday life. Although we don't own any horses, we wouldn't want it any other way. There are a few horse property's right in my own neighborhood. Indeed, I think you will love it out here, just as much as we do.

I live on the other side of the mountain. Olsen's sells colorado Timothy grass hay. It's over priced and most is in poor condition from what I have seen. Nearly everyone sells Bermuda hay, but it isn't sufficient feed, you'll need to supplement. I have been feeding a Rye/Alfalfa mix that I buy from UVX Hay in Cottonwood. Their delivery is handled by John at Anything Goes Feed and Tack in McGuireville. You can find him on Facebook, I don't know if he delivers to Prescott or not but would probably arrange something for a large enough order. UVX also brings pure Ryegrass hay out of the Phx area but it tends to run out by late summer. Nice hay. All my beasts love it.

If you end up driving to Phoenix I can tell you that Black Mountain Feed in Cave Creek has outstanding hay !

I have lived all over the state of AZ and I can vouch for them ( a lot of places but not Prescott ).

There is a person in Peoria who cuts his own hay and have talk to him on the phone as well but have NOT purchased his hay. Be sure to ask if the hay is SPRAYED and if it is this year's cut.

Hard to believe what people pass off as edible to a horse. The number of times my Arab has not eaten his food when I have gotten hay somewhere else.
