I have to say I agree. Extrapoints are never missed, so this play is just a waste of time. I think all of the above in the article are possibilities. 1) Push it back, 2) Make it a play from scrimmage 3) Just give everyone 7 points and shorten the game.
I would like to see the return for the defense be worth 2 points as in college.
As for the kick, kickers are too good. I say make the goal post width thinner - or have an extra point width and a FG width. What is it for arena football?

I like that idea lot. Not having a different PAT and FG width, but just a narrower one in general. Kickers in the NFL are too good and they completely change the dynamics of the game compared to other levels of play or how the game used to be played. I couldn't help but think as I watched my Eagles lose last week as the Saints drove into field goal range, that football must be one of the only sports in the world were a team could be *leading* as the game was about to end, yet probably (>90% chance) going to lose the game anyway. A FG under 40 years is too much of a gimme for NFL kickers. Pretty much the same thing in the SF-GB game: decided by a chip shot field goal.
Think of it as calibrating the field of play to the skill level of the players. Pro golfers don't play from the ladies tees, so why should NFL kickers get chip shots? I wouldn't want to eliminate kicking from the game by any means or even cut a little of it out. On the contrary, narrower field goal posts wouldn't even mean diminished field goal range, just decreased success rate, which would make the game better and more exciting.
And yeah, I agree, the defense should be able to advance the PAT as they can in college.
That’s one way to encourage two-point conversions. But it’s not as exciting as the idea that the Indianapolis Colts are offering. This week, the Colts caused some buzz by making a crazy-sounding suggestion to the NFL’s competition committee: If a team converted its two-point attempt, it would get a shot at an additional point by attempting a 50-yard field goal.
Note - though the quote above says 'field goal', the rest of the sentence and the article makes clear that it actually means a one-point conversion kick from the 40-yard-line.
Better yet, bring out "Celebrity Kickers", such as mayors, governors, movie & TV stars, musicians and other such notables, and see if they can make the kick instead. Most likely, there would be more missed PATs and many more laughs.
I liked the idea of making whoever scored the touchdown kick the extra point. Like an And-1 in basketball.
Love it!
