I know what you mean, when I watch Hoarders it scares me for that reason. I notice it really seems to get worse around middle age and i'm middle aged. i think people start running out of space, plus as I notice with myself, the physical part of cleaning gets harder. When I was younger, I could go on a weekend long cleaning spree, spending hours de-cluttering, dusting, etc. Now the knees, the back don't handle that as well.

How to stop it?

How about reading the Obituary column everyday! There, you'll see all ages!

And were any of them able to even take their socks with them?

OP, I think you should maybe seek some therapy to help you with your shopping addiction. If I were you I would worry about mice or rats getting into your attic and destroying everything you have bought, and then you will still have a big debt and nothing to sell.

Why not cut the credit cards up, and only use a debit?

Use only cash.

If you pay in cash, you automatically dont spend so much because you can see the money go away and it almost hurts.

No Credit Cards, no other CARDS, just plain cash.

This sounds like a form of OCD to me. (I know because I have some OCD tendencies myself)
I don't think you will be able to stop it just by willpower. There are books like the OCD workbook that could help, but if you are able, I would go see someone professional. If you were able to stop I think you would have knowing how much you are sabotaging your life.
